Part of educating yourself about victims is understanding what is available for them in terms of resources and assistance. The readings this week are focused on victims of domestic violence. In Florida, this type of violence is defined in Florida Statute 741.28(2) (2020). Within the legal guidance contained in several other Florida statutes, domestic violence centers are also described (see Florida Statute 39.905). To prepare for this discussion post, please read these sections in the Florida Statutes.

After reading the statutes and module material, please choose a county in Florida and research the domestic violence center (also called domestic violence shelter) in that area. Each county should have a center. DO NOT use one of the three shelters that serve Orange, Osceola and Seminoles counties covered in the PowerPoint. After researching the center/shelter, please respond to the following:

  1. Describe the services that are offered and are available at the center/shelter for victims.
  2. Determine if they meet the requirements set forth in Florida Statute 39.905(1)(c).
  3. If you were in charge and money was not an issue, how would you make the center/shelter better? What additional services might you consider?
